Book giveaway: Lorene Cary's new novel "If Sons, Then Heirs"

Lorene Cary, pictured at right, a University of Pennsylvania lecturer and author of "Pride, Black Ice" and "The Price of a Child," a novel about the Underground Railroad, which was the inaugural One Book, One Philadelphia featured book selection, has published a new novel, "If Sons, Then Heirs."

A hardcover copy of this novel (Atria Books, to be released April 19, $24, 306 pp,) recently landed on the desk of The Mercury's entertainment editor and triathlete extraordinaire, Diane Hoffman. She has generously donated it to be given away for free on my blog. If you would like it, just post a comment letting me know where to send the book (or, if you prefer, send me an email to mkaras@pottsmerc.com)

"If Sons,Then Heirs" follows the intertwined stories of different African American families struggling to establish or maintain relationships in spite of the sacrifices they have made to survive. Read the Publisher's Weekly review here.

Cary is the founder of Art Sanctuary, an African American lecture and performance program in Philadelphia; her honors include the 2003 Philadelphia Award and a Pew Fellowship in the Arts.

Cary will read from this book on May 12 at 7:30 p.m. at the Free Library of Philadelphia, Central Library, 1901 Vine St., Philadelphia (between 19th and 20th Streets on the Parkway). The event is free, with no tickets or reservations required. To learn more, call 215-567-4341.

Congrats to Linda K. of Winchester, Calif., who sent me an e-mail and won the book. Perhaps she'll write a guest blog to tell us how she liked it.

Thanks for reading, Linda!
